Senior Developer Experience Writer - Ably

Thousands of developers around the world use Ably's SDKs and APIs to power realtime features in their applications. As our Senior Developer Experience Writer, you’ll be contributing directly to helping developers quickly understand Ably, build confidently, and succeed with the platform.

At its core, this is an AI-focused role; you’ll set up foundations that empower engineers to produce first-class developer documentation with AI at scale, automating checks, maintaining quality, and allowing for rapid iteration in content and tooling.

Day-to-day Responsibilities

• Use AI to produce quality content: Write reusable prompts and skills for docs contributors to ensure content meets quality standards.
• Define and uphold content standards: Shape docs structure and style, leveraging AI to check for technical accuracy and fast learning.
• Build engaging educational content templates: Lead by example by producing reference templates and skills that team members can leverage.
• Empower engineers: Coach and support engineering contributors to produce accurate, developer-friendly content.
• Champion effective AI use: Promote AI for efficiency while ensuring content remains editorially sound, technically accurate, and free from trust-undermining AI patterns.
• Maintain and elevate the docs platform: Shape the documentation platform's components, structure, navigation, and tooling.

What We're Looking For

• Proven success creating technical content for developers, such as documentation, API references, and guides with a public portfolio.
• Experience reviewing and giving feedback on technical writing, with the ability to coach others.
• Experience and desire to work in an AI-forward environment, including automation and agents at scale.
• Practical experience using AI tools for writing, research, and coding while understanding their limitations.
• Familiarity with APIs, SDKs, and modern web development tools, with the ability to read, write, and reason about code examples in at least one language (ideally JavaScript).
• Strong instincts for developer experience and onboarding.
• A proactive, self-directed mindset with end-to-end project ownership.
• Startup or growth-stage company experience, or adaptability in a fast-paced agile environment.

Bonus Points For

• Maintaining and shaping a documentation platform or developer portal.
• Familiarity with information architecture principles and content strategy.
• Git-driven workflows for content management.
• Knowledge of event-driven architecture.
