Senior Design Engineer - Enode

About Enode

The grid was built for predictable, centralised power. Today it's absorbing intermittent supply from grid scale solar and wind, alongside dynamic demand from EVs, heat pumps, and home batteries. The missing piece is software that can connect and orchestrate these devices at scale.

Enode provides the infrastructure layer that makes this possible. Our Connect API gives energy companies a single integration to 1000+ devices across 80+ brands. Our optimisation tooling gives energy companies the building blocks to manage those devices locally - think smart charging for EVs. Our Flex product turns those connected devices into a flexible, controllable asset for energy companies.

We work with device manufacturers across the energy hardware ecosystem - from EV brands to heat pump and solar inverter producers. Our customers are energy retailers, utilities, and traders building the next generation of energy services. We're backed by Y Combinator, Lowercarbon Capital, and Creandum.

AI is fundamental to how we work

AI is how a team our size keeps rewiring the way we work, fast enough to match what our mission demands. We look for people who reach for AI as a reflex and who can drop a habit that used to work. People who care about unblocking others, not just about what they ship themselves.

The Role

The design team at Enode ships. We’re looking for a Senior Design Engineer who’s as comfortable in a codebase as they are in Figma, and who closes the gap between the two.

You’ll build the interfaces energy retailers and their developers use: the Enode Platform, where they integrate and debug; Link UI, the flow their customers go through when they connect a car or a heat pump; and the website that tells our story. You’ll turn designs into production-ready code, prototype ideas before they become designs, and help look after the design system that keeps all of it consistent.

What You’ll Do

  • Build and ship production UI for the Platform, Link UI and the website, working directly in our codebases.
  • Contribute heavily to the design system in code, together with our front-end engineers: components, tokens and documentation, kept in sync with Figma, Claude and other tooling.
  • Prototype in code to test ideas quickly with customers and the team, before anyone commits to a direction.
  • Raise the quality bar for interaction, motion, accessibility and performance across everything we ship.
  • Work with engineering on how front-end work gets built, reviewed and released, so design and code don’t drift apart.
  • Help our engineering teams design APIs and changes to them, so what developers build on is clear and easy to use.
  • Build tools and prototypes that help design and engineering work together, and help shape how we use AI as a team.

Requirements

You care about the last 10% of an interface: the timing of a transition, the edge case in an empty state, the spacing that’s 2px off. You also care about the energy transition, and you want your work to help people choose electric.

  • 5+ years building user interfaces, in a design engineering, front-end or design-focused engineering role.
  • Deep knowledge of React and TypeScript, and a strong understanding of HTML, CSS and accessibility.
  • A solid understanding of APIs: you’re comfortable reading the docs and building on real data, you understand what developers need from them, and you have a view on how they should be designed.
  • A portfolio that shows both: things you designed, and things you built.
  • You’ve spent the past year using AI in your design and engineering work, and pushing how far it can go. You have a clear view on where it helps and where it doesn’t.
  • Experience contributing to a design system that people actually use.
  • Comfort working on your own: you can take a rough idea to a shipped feature without a detailed spec.
  • Clear communication with designers and engineers alike.
  • Excellent written communication: we are remote-first, so writing well is key.

What We Offer

  • Opportunity to join and impact an early-stage climate tech startup with global aspirations as we scale.
  • A mission-driven, fun and caring environment with high drive and ambition.
  • Competitive compensation, including an attractive employee option program.
  • Access to best-in-class AI tooling and real investment in your AI fluency.
  • Remote-first in Europe, with the option of attending an office in Oslo or receiving a co-working pass on demand.
  • Three annual off-sites to connect with the team in exciting & fun places.
  • Flexible, human-first culture.
  • Stipend for setting up your home office.
