GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform for DevSecOps, trusted by more than 50 million registered users and over 50% of the Fortune 100 to ship better, more secure software faster.
About the Role
As an Intermediate Backend Engineer, you will take backend features and improvements from clarifying the problem through shipping them and following up in production. You will work within a product area, partnering with Product Management, Frontend, Infrastructure, and Security to deliver predictably and contribute to the quality, security, performance, and maintainability of shared backend code and services.
You will be trusted to work with minimal guidance, know when to seek help, and communicate clearly in a remote, asynchronous environment—with tenured engineers alongside you to review work, solve hard problems, and help you grow.
Why You’ll Love This Role
- Ownership: Take features from requirements through delivery and follow-up on a platform used by millions.
- Learning and Growth: Benefit from code and design reviews treated as continuous learning loops.
- Innovative Culture: Integrate AI into your daily engineering workflow and develop judgment around its practical application.
- Autonomy: Thrive in a remote-first, asynchronous organization built on clear written communication and self-direction.
- User-Centric Collaboration: Partner closely with PMs and designers to understand the core problem behind every feature.
What You’ll Do
- Own and Ship Features: Design, implement, test, and ship backend features and improvements with minimal guidance using Ruby/Rails, Go, or other modern languages.
- Build for Production: Write maintainable, secure, observable, and performant code. Maintain APIs, background jobs, integrations, and work with data models, migrations, and query performance.
- Test and Review: Improve automated coverage (unit, integration, contract, and end-to-end) and review peer code for correctness, security, performance, and operational risk.
- Operate What You Build: Investigate build, test, deployment, and runtime failures, address technical debt, and participate in team on-call or operational support.
- Leverage AI: Use AI productively in day-to-day engineering while validating outputs and understanding limitations.
What You’ll Bring
- Professional backend engineering experience building and shipping production applications.
- Strong fundamentals in programming, APIs, databases, testing, debugging, and performance.
- Experience with Ruby/Rails, Go, or modern backend languages, paired with strong adaptability to learn new technologies.
- Demonstrated ability to independently take features from concept to production.
- Sound engineering instincts regarding security, reliability, performance, maintainability, and modular architecture.
- Strong written communication skills tailored for an asynchronous work environment.
- Practical experience using and evaluating AI coding tools.
Helpful Experience
- Production Go services, APIs, concurrency, profiling, or gRPC.
- Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, CI/CD, or cloud deployments.
- Rust (systems, security, performance, or platform work).
- PostgreSQL, schema evolution, caching, queues, messaging, or event-driven architectures.
- Observability using metrics, logs, traces, dashboards, and alerts.
- Contributing to modular monoliths, bounded contexts, or distributed services.
