Engineering Manager, Tenant Scale: Gitaly - GitLab

Role Overview

As an Engineering Manager for Gitaly at GitLab, you will guide a deeply technical team focused on building, maintaining, and scaling Gitalyβ€”GitLab's Git data storage tier. The team's work spans Gitaly core development, cross-team support, tooling, scalability improvements, new data formats, and ongoing maintenance.

This role is ideal for an engineering leader who can guide senior and staff engineers through complex, long-horizon technical projects while fostering a culture of technical rigor, clear accountability, and asynchronous collaboration.

Key Focus Areas

  • Scaling Git storage infrastructure
  • Gitaly performance, scalability, and foundational architecture

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and mentor a team of senior and staff engineers working on Gitaly and low-level infrastructure.
  • Build a team culture grounded in technical rigor, ownership, agency, and accountability.
  • Drive execution on complex, long-horizon technical projects across performance, scalability, and core architecture.
  • Guide the team in balancing product roadmap delivery with infrastructure and scalability priorities.
  • Support career development through clear feedback, mentoring, and growth opportunities.
  • Foster effective written communication and asynchronous alignment across a globally distributed team.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams (e.g., Git) to provide Gitaly expertise, feature design, and roadmap clarity.

Qualifications

  • Engineering Management: Proven experience managing engineering teams, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
  • Technical Depth: Background in low-level systems, version control systems, distributed systems, or storage engines (ideally in Go or performance-sensitive environments).
  • Technical Judgment: Ability to guide specialized engineers through high-stakes architectural tradeoffs and technical debt management.
  • Remote & Async Culture: Strong written communication and demonstrated experience working asynchronously in distributed, multi-timezone environments.
  • Execution: Track record of delivering under pressure on ambiguous, long-horizon technical projects with measurable outcomes.
