Senior Backend Engineer (Ruby), Plan: Spec-Driven Development - GitLab

About the Role

As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Plan: Spec-Driven Development team, you will help build GitLab's intent-to-code loop: agentic workflows that turn stated intent into refined work items, implementation plans, and verified, mergeable code. You will own early-stage backend work across flows, APIs, data models, and evaluation systems.

What You’ll Do

• Lead Backend Features: Drive features from early product discussions through technical design, implementation, and post-launch learning.
• Build Agentic Workflows: Develop the infrastructure for agent-generated work items, implementation plans, and code generation.
• Evaluation Systems: Build benchmarking systems to measure workflow quality, token cost, and success rates.
• Technical Stack: Utilize Ruby on Rails, Python, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, and AI gateway integrations.
• Collaborate: Work directly with product, design, and engineering partners to shape scope and make practical trade-offs.
• Leadership: Mentor engineers, contribute to technical direction, and coordinate multi-person projects in an asynchronous environment.

What You’ll Bring

• Core Skills: Strong Ruby on Rails experience in large production codebases and production experience with Python.
• Project Leadership: Proven ability to drive substantial, multi-month projects with clear business outcomes.
• Product Mindset: Experience owning features end-to-end, including scope definition and user engagement.
• Technical Depth: Strong API design and SQL fundamentals; ability to read modern frontend code.
• AI Interest: Experience or strong interest in exploring AI-assisted development and agent systems.
• Collaboration: Ability to work independently in an all-remote, async-first environment.

We are a distributed team of four engineers across Canada and Europe. We operate with high visibility, short iterations, and a focus on rapid experimentation. You will have broad ownership and space for creative problem-solving.
