About the Role
As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Plan: Spec-Driven Development team, you will help build GitLab's intent-to-code loop: agentic workflows that turn stated intent into refined work items, implementation plans, and verified, mergeable code. You will own early-stage backend work across flows, APIs, data models, and evaluation systems.
What You’ll Do
- Lead backend features from early product discussions through technical design, implementation, and rollout.
- Build the infrastructure for agent-generated work items, implementation plans, and code.
- Develop evaluation and benchmarking systems to measure workflow quality, token cost, and success rates.
- Utilize Ruby on Rails, Python, PostgreSQL, GraphQL, and AI gateway technologies.
- Collaborate with product, design, and engineering partners to shape scope and make practical trade-offs.
- Mentor other engineers and contribute to technical direction across the Plan group.
- Work in short iterations, sharing progress through demos and user feedback.
What You’ll Bring
- Strong Ruby on Rails experience in a large production codebase.
- Production experience with Python.
- Experience driving substantial, multi-month projects with clear business outcomes.
- A product-focused mindset with experience owning features end-to-end.
- Strong API design and SQL fundamentals.
- Ability to read modern frontend code.
- Experience with or interest in AI-assisted development.
- Ability to thrive in an asynchronous, all-remote environment.

We are a distributed team of four engineers across Canada and Europe. We operate in an async-first environment with weekly syncs, retrospectives, and a focus on high-visibility, early-stage product bets.
