Platform Engineer - Compute Capacity

About Supabase

Supabase is the Postgres development platform, built by developers for developers. We provide a complete backend solution including Database, Auth, Storage, Edge Functions, Realtime, and Vector Search. All services are deeply integrated and designed for growth.

About the Role

We are seeking a platform engineer to join our Compute Capacity team. This team owns the capacity plan that keeps compute supply ahead of demand across every region we operate in—the forecasting, buffer policy, and provisioning systems that ensure projects never run into unexpected resource walls.

You will design, build, and operate systems that are both robust and highly automated, helping us maintain the right buffer at the right cost, catch drift before it becomes a shortage, and provide a single, trustworthy view of capacity across millions of managed databases.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain the capacity plan to keep compute supply ahead of demand across regions and instance families.
  • Support buffer policy by modeling headroom targets and cost tradeoffs.
  • Automate reservation acquisition, fleet reconciliation, and drift detection.
  • Extend infrastructure as code for capacity-relevant provisioning.
  • Instrument capacity metrics: saturation, reservation coverage, idle buffer, forecast error, and provisioning latency.
  • Tune capacity alerting to surface headroom, quota, and reservation issues months in advance.
  • Support the demand gate for large customer commitments, launches, and migrations.
  • Contribute to mitigation projects: right-sizing, instance-family migrations, and autoscaling improvements.
  • Drive down compute cost per database through placement and commitment coverage.
  • Participate in capacity incident response and post-incident follow-through.

You Might Be A Good Fit If

  • You have 5+ years of experience in infrastructure engineering, SRE, platform, or capacity engineering at SaaS or cloud infrastructure scale.
  • You have production software engineering experience (owning and operating services) in languages like TypeScript, Python, or Go.
  • You are comfortable working with incomplete forecasts and revising assumptions as data changes.
  • You have experience with Infrastructure as Code (Pulumi or Terraform).
  • You have built or maintained observability systems (Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch).
  • You possess solid working knowledge of AWS EC2 (instance families, purchase options, capacity reservations, and quota mechanics).
  • You have financial fluency regarding reservation economics and cost tradeoffs.
  • You communicate clearly across technical and non-technical stakeholders.
