Overview
Reports to: Chief Technology Officer
Location: Greater Toronto Area (must be based in the GTA)
As Vantage's engineering organization grows, we're adding a second VP of Engineering to help lead it. Reporting to our CTO, you'll lead a group of engineering teams through their managers and own how those teams plan, build, and ship. You'll work alongside our other VP of Engineering and our Senior Director of Engineering to run engineering as one leadership group.
You'll own delivery, quality, and reliability for your area, build and develop the managers who lead it, and work with Product and Design leadership to turn company goals into a roadmap your teams can execute. You'll also help set engineering-wide standards for how we hire, plan, and release software.
This role suits a leader who has run a multi-team organization through managers, stays close enough to the architecture to make sound technical calls, and communicates clearly with executives and engineers alike. You've managed engineering managers and can explain technical concepts in plain terms to colleagues across the business and to external clients.
Key Responsibilities
Organization & People Leadership
- Lead your engineering teams through their managers, with clear goals, regular feedback, and growth paths for managers and engineers.
- Build a strong management bench by hiring, coaching, and, when needed, performance-managing engineering managers.
- Plan headcount for your area and run a hiring process that brings in strong engineers at every level.
Delivery & Technical Direction
- Own delivery for your area, from planning and estimates through risk management and release, so commitments to Product and the business are met.
- Set technical direction for your teams in line with company-wide architecture, and step into design decisions where the stakes are high.
- Own the reliability, security, and performance of the systems your teams run.
- Improve developer velocity by shortening feedback loops, streamlining CI/CD and releases, and reducing engineering toil.
Engineering Leadership & Collaboration
- Work with the other VP of Engineering and the Senior Director to set org-wide engineering standards, planning cycles, and team structure as we grow.
- Partner with Product, Design, and client-facing teams to turn product strategy into roadmaps and customer outcomes.
- Represent engineering with external clients, explaining technical concepts, architecture, and roadmap in terms their teams can act on.
- Manage your area's budget and report on delivery, quality, and team health to the CTO and executive team.
Qualifications & Experience
- 10+ years in engineering leadership and senior leadership roles, including managing managers of managers.
- Experience leading a multi-team engineering organization through managers, including hiring, developing, and performance-managing engineering managers.
- A track record of delivering customer-facing SaaS products predictably as the product and team scale.
- A strong technical background in modern SaaS engineering (CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, agile delivery), with the judgement to contribute to architecture and system design decisions.
- Experience managing expectations with executive and C-suite leaders, and working closely with Product, Design, and client-facing teams.
- Ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders across the business and for external clients, and to work cross-functionally.
- Experience owning an engineering budget and headcount plan.
- Experience scaling an engineering organization through fast growth.
- Preferred: Experience with ad tech, marketing technology, or other high-volume data platforms, including third-party ad platform APIs.
