
Software Quality Manager
The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) is seeking an experienced Software Quality Manager to lead two teams responsible for testing and documentation services across multiple WMF engineering teams. This role fosters a culture where software quality and documentation are shared responsibilities.
This position supports geographically distributed teams of 5-10 Test Engineers and 3 Technical Writers. These teams enhance software quality by providing technical documentation, automated test suites, and manual testing for the software that powers Wikipedia and its sister projects. The WMF is dedicated to making knowledge accessible globally, offering an opportunity to contribute to empowering developers worldwide to build high-quality, well-documented, and scalable software.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders to align on testing and documentation needs, balancing project goals with technical requirements and team capabilities.
- Drive execution by ensuring Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are met, key performance metrics are tracked, and work is unblocked.
- Expand and refine automated processes, supporting teams in adopting best practices for software quality and technical documentation.
- Promote a quality-first and documentation-first mindset across engineering teams.
- Oversee the design, implementation, and maintenance of automated test suites, manual testing practices, and technical documentation.
- Ensure team engagement and productivity, helping them understand the broader project landscape and their contributions.
- Coach team members, conduct performance reviews, provide career guidance, and cultivate a professional and inclusive work culture.
Skills and Experience:
- Demonstrated engineering experience in a technical management or leadership role.
- Strong hands-on experience developing, designing, and reviewing software applications using languages such as Go, Python, PHP, or other object-oriented programming languages.
- Proven track record of managing a team that provides critical centralized services (e.g., quality assurance, technical documentation, technical program management) to various product teams.
- Experience managing expectations of diverse teams with varying goals, ensuring effective prioritization and value delivery.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, with the ability to articulate complex technical topics clearly.
- Established success working with multicultural, remote, and distributed high-performing teams.

Additionally, we'd love if you have:
- Knowledge of testing automation tools for E2E and Visual Regression.
- Familiarity with documentation-as-code tools like Markdown.
- Experience transitioning Test Engineers from manual to automated testing.
- Experience editing Wikipedia or with Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons communities, or other collaborative enterprises.
- Familiarity with MediaWiki.

The Wikimedia Foundation is a remote-first organization with staff and contractors in over 40 countries. Salaries are competitive, equitable, and consistent with our values. The anticipated annual pay range for this position within the United States is US$129,193 to US$202,962, with the final offer determined by factors including cost of living. For international applicants, the pay range will be adjusted by country of hire. Salary history is not considered. Compensation is based on skills, experience, and location.
