The Role
As a Senior Software Engineer on the New Markets team, you will design, implement, and maintain systems and services powering Alpaca's core financial platform. You will serve as the operational reliability and engineering lead during regional business hours, acting as incident commander to ensure proactive 24x7 stability.
In this full-stack role, you will architect scalable applications, mentor regional engineering talent, support cross-functional projects, and help expand Alpaca's brokerage infrastructure into new international markets.
Key Responsibilities
- Design highly scalable, mission-critical brokerage systems.
- Develop and enhance middle- and back-office systems, including gRPC microservices, React-based administration UIs, and third-party vendor integrations.
- Collaborate with core teams to enable multi-language, multi-currency, and multi-market capabilities across the core platform.
- Partner with tech leads across regions synchronously and asynchronously to align global engineering efforts.
- Serve as regional incident commander, troubleshooting incidents and bugs to maintain high system reliability.
- Build solutions navigating regulatory requirements to support Alpaca's global growth.
- Participate in on-call rotations to assist with critical engineering projects.
Qualifications (Must-Haves)
- Strong problem-solving abilities paired with a proactive mindset.
- Proficiency in Go (or similar backend languages) and expertise in designing robust backend architectures.
- Strong fundamentals in computer science and proven experience in software engineering architecture.
- Demonstrated experience with event-driven design.
- Ability to lead incident response with authority and troubleshoot high-priority operational bugs.
- Strong communication skills to collaborate with global engineering teams, local regulators, and internal stakeholders.
- Experience working independently in a fully remote, globally distributed environment under high velocity.
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience with modern AI development tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code, Codex).
- Background in financial services, fintech, or online trading platforms (order management, execution, trade settlement).
- Experience designing complex financial systems, including double-entry accounting and multi-currency processing.
- Understanding of domain-driven design.
- Experience navigating regulatory compliance requirements in financial markets.
- Previous experience in a fast-growing tech startup.
