Senior Systems Engineer - Automattic

Automattic, the tech powerhouse behind WordPress.com, Jetpack, Tumblr, and WooCommerce, is looking for Senior Systems Engineers. On our Systems team, you’ll deliver high availability, performance, and security for tens of billions of page views and over a billion web surfers each month across 30 private data centers on 6 continents.

Key Responsibilities

• Availability & Uptime: Maximize availability and uptime through proactive planning, sound architectural decisions, automation, and rapid incident response.
• Performance Optimization: Optimize server-side and client-side interactions to deliver fast experiences for millions of global users.
• Security & Reliability: Protect services and data through proactive monitoring, real-time incident response, disaster recovery, and robust backup management.
• Developer Enablement: Remove friction for Automattic developers shipping software, providing quick answers and operational support.

What We're Looking For

• Experience maintaining large Nginx setups with advanced routing configurations, load balancing, high availability, and reliable performance.
• Experience running very large MySQL/MariaDB deployments while ensuring performance, uptime, and data integrity.
• Proven background running and debugging PHP applications at scale.
• Solid understanding of lower-level systems stacks, including filesystems, networking, memory management, and Linux kernel internals.
• Deep operational and maintenance experience with complex, public-facing web hosting systems.
• Ability to autonomously architect, prototype, and maintain solutions for varied hosting challenges.
• Extreme attention to detail and commitment to operational excellence.
• Openness to travel 2–3 weeks per year for team meetups.

Salary & Benefits

• Salary Range: $120,000 – $180,000+ USD (Global salary ranges paid in local currency).
