Bitwarden is the trusted identity security leader for millions of users worldwide, empowering enterprises, developers, and individuals to securely manage and share sensitive information anywhere. Bitwarden makes it easy for all users to extend robust security across their devices with password management, secrets management, and passwordless and passkey innovations.
As a Staff Android Engineer on the Mobile team at Bitwarden, you will be responsible for building and maintaining the native Android Bitwarden application, working with other teams to maintain feature parity across clients, and enabling your team and others to build secure, performant, and user-focused software.
This is an all-remote team and we're looking for someone located in the U.S. We do not offer visa sponsorship at this time.
Responsibilities

- Lead the design and implementation of complex initiatives that span multiple sprints or quarters, with impact extending across the team's domain and across teams
- Own and drive resolution of the most complex technical problems in the Android domain, defining the solution space for ambiguous problems and evaluating trade-offs
- Establish and uphold engineering standards and best practices through code reviews, architectural guidance, and mentorship
- Drive architectural decisions for complex work within established frameworks, and partner with the Architecture team when work spans multiple systems
- Act as a force multiplier: unblock the team on hard problems, mentor engineers, and grow the collective technical capability of the group
- Shape the Android technical vision and roadmap in partnership with your Engineering Manager, product, and design
- Identify risks, dependencies, and technical debt early, and guide the breakdown of large initiatives into executable phases
- Take a leadership role in hiring, including leading technical interviews and contributing to calibration
- Participate in code reviews, learning, and spreading knowledge across the organization
- Proactively stay updated on the latest trends, tools, and technologies within the Android development ecosystem
- Occasionally contribute bug fixes or shepherd pull requests submitted by the user community
Requirements
- Demonstrated, deep expertise developing complex Android applications with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, with a track record of leading initiatives beyond individual features
- Strong command of Android UI/UX design and architecture principles, including designing solutions for complex, cross-system initiatives
- Experience setting technical standards and driving their adoption across a team or organization
- Familiarity with unit testing, UI testing, and snapshot testing, and the judgment to establish testing standards for others
- Experience using Claude Code, or a similar generative AI coding platform
- Experience with Android-specific components (e.g., Autofill Service, Accessibility Service) and Google Play internal/beta testing tracks
- Proven ability to mentor and coach other engineers, and develop technical talent
- Strength in ambiguity: ability to frame complex, poorly defined problems in ways that enable productive discussion
- Ability to drive alignment across teams and stakeholders, resolving conflicts and building consensus
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to produce reliable documentation
- Collaborative and adaptable mindset with an authentic communication style
- Excitement and enthusiasm for open source and better internet security
