Analytics Engineer II - Branch Insurance

About Branch

Branch is on a mission to make insurance more accessible, so more people can be covered. We innovate using data, tech, and automation to simplify insurance from start to finish—we eliminated inaccurate quotes in favor of real prices, created a better way to bundle, and cut unnecessary costs in the traditional insurance process. Then we pass those savings along to our members. Basically, we’re doing insurance the way it was meant to be.

Branch is remote-first, with most team members choosing to work from home. Our headquarters are located in Columbus, Ohio, where we come together from time to time to build relationships. We also have office space in Columbia and Concordia, Missouri, as well as Forreston, Illinois. Once a year, the entire company gathers for "BranchFest".

Branch has a preference for candidates in Ohio, but is open to candidates located in AZ, FL, GA, IL, IN, IA, KS, KY, MD, MI, MO, NV, NC, OH, PA, SC, SD, TN, TX, and WI. Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis without sponsorship.

About the Role

As an Analytics Engineer, you'll build the data models, tables, and self-service tools that our Accounting, Actuarial, and Claims teams rely on, working in SQL and dbt on BigQuery.

You'll join the Analytics Engineering team in Branch's Data Office, reporting to the Senior Manager, Analytics Engineering. Requests come to the team as tickets, and you'll take yours from the initial question through to production data. As you grow in the role, you'll own a data domain and the stakeholder relationships that come with it.

AI is built into how the team works. Claude Code drafts pull requests inside our dbt project, and the team reviews, corrects, and improves what it produces. Branch also moves faster than a large carrier: work that takes a quarter elsewhere ships here in a couple of weeks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build views, tables, data models, data dictionaries, and self-service tools in SQL and dbt, with support from peers and senior members of the Data Office.
  • Monitor data quality proactively, prevent unwanted changes and defects, and fix them promptly when they occur.
  • Work tickets from Accounting, Actuarial, and Claims stakeholders from the request through to production.
  • Understand each project's full scope, how it interacts with other projects, and how data flows between them. Advocate for best practices and adherence to service guidelines.
  • Review AI-generated code carefully, catch mistakes, and help the team's AI tools improve over time.
  • Collaborate with leaders to implement, refine, and document processes and best practices that improve quality and the functionality of self-service tools.
  • Build a working knowledge of how data development works at Branch and of the insurance business behind the data.

Skills & Experience

  • 3+ years of relevant experience in data or reporting development, including data modeling and data quality monitoring.
  • Strong, hands-on SQL experience (building models and transformations yourself, not just dashboards).
  • Experience with dbt is a strong plus.
  • Experience with process automation, automated reporting, and business intelligence.
  • Experience with Python is a strong plus; JavaScript or another programming language is valued.
  • Experience building with AI coding tools, Claude Code in particular, is a strong plus.
  • Experience with insurance data, especially claims, accounting, or actuarial data, is a plus.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment where you own your work from start to finish.
