Engineering Manager, Data & Clinical Integration Teams - CareMessage

About CareMessage

CareMessage is a social enterprise and the largest patient engagement platform for low-income populations in the United States. We deliver personalized health education and care coordination through text messaging — reaching patients where they already are, in the language they speak, at the moments that matter most. Unlike technology built for large health systems and adapted down, CareMessage is designed from the ground up for organizations serving low-income, historically marginalized communities.

Role Overview

The Engineering Manager, Data & Clinical Integration owns and drives the technical direction of the two teams responsible for CareMessage's data — the Clinical Integration team, which connects CareMessage to electronic health records (EHRs) and other clinical data sources across our customer base, and the Data team, which turns that data into trustworthy insights. CareMessage supports over 400 safety-net healthcare organizations, and these two teams are the engine behind our ability to measurably demonstrate impact on clinical outcomes, access to care, and the social drivers of health. This is a leadership role over existing teams: their systems and roadmaps are already in place, and your job is to lead, deepen, and scale them.

The Clinical Integration team builds and maintains the integrations that connect CareMessage to leading EHRs (Epic, eClinicalWorks, NextGen, AthenaHealth, and others) over HL7, FHIR, Proprietary APIs, and direct-database interfaces using the Rhapsody integration engine. The Data team builds on top of that with a medallion (bronze/silver/gold) architecture in BigQuery using native Google Cloud services and dbt, surfacing insights through Metabase dashboards and AI/ML-driven workflows.

Core Requirements

  • Proven Track Record: At least 5 years of successful experience as an Engineering Manager over Integration and/or Data Engineering teams in early-to-growth-stage remote startup environments.
  • Strategic Leadership: Demonstrated ability to lead and drive the delivery of long-term technical projects across multiple teams.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong technical acumen with a deep understanding of SQL, data concepts, pipelines (ELT), and cloud data warehousing.
  • Modern & AI-Assisted Engineering: A track record of adopting modern development practices and leveraging AI-assisted tooling (e.g., Agentic coding, LLM-based workflows) to raise engineering velocity and quality responsibly in a healthcare/PHI context.
  • Hands-on Experience: The ability to get hands-on with SQL and data tooling when needed to answer key data questions and unblock the team.
  • Collaborative Expertise: Exceptional collaboration and influencing skills, working cross-departmentally to craft optimal solutions.
  • Communication Skills: Outstanding written and verbal communication skills in a fully remote environment.
  • Residency: Must reside within the United States.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience managing healthcare integration / interoperability teams (HL7, FHIR) and Data teams.
  • Experience in a healthcare technology environment with Security and Compliance requirements (HIPAA/PHI).
  • Experience with our Tech Stack: GCP / BigQuery, dbt, Python, Metabase, Rhapsody (JavaScript), HL7, FHIR, PostgreSQL, Ruby on Rails.
  • Background in TDD engineering environments.

Job Responsibilities

  • Directly oversee and guide the Data and Clinical Integration teams, providing constructive feedback and conducting performance reviews.
  • Actively participate in the recruitment, interviewing, and retention of engineering talent.
  • Champion the adoption of modern, AI-assisted engineering practices across both teams while setting responsible-use guardrails around PHI.
  • Refine and execute the technical strategy for converting EHR clinical data into trustworthy, query-ready data.
  • Manage shared roadmaps and dependencies between the Data and Clinical Integration teams.
