Senior Software Engineer (Repositories)

Chainguard is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their Repository team. This role is crucial for building the trusted front door to secure open-source software, focusing on customer-facing infrastructure for serving libraries and laying the groundwork for a unified repository experience across various artifact types.

About the Role

This is an infrastructure-heavy backend role at the intersection of software engineering and production infrastructure. You will be responsible for the architecture and implementation of core systems, including package registries, APIs, and production services that securely serve artifacts to customers at high scale and reliability. You will write Go services, build and operate customer-facing systems, improve reliability and performance, and shape the future expansion of Chainguard Repository.

What You'll Do

• Own the technical direction for key components of Chainguard Repository, including customer-facing registries, APIs, and serving systems.
• Design, build, and operate high-availability backend services in Go.
• Lead efforts in scalability, reliability, observability, and load testing for production systems.
• Drive technical decisions around repository architecture, service boundaries, and operational patterns for artifact-serving infrastructure.
• Partner with engineers across Chainguard to ensure a cohesive repository experience and support for new artifact types.

What We're Looking For

• 5+ years of experience building and operating production backend or infrastructure systems with senior-level ownership.
• Strong Go experience, or deep backend systems experience with the ability to ramp quickly in Go.
• Experience building or operating customer-facing infrastructure like package registries, artifact repositories, APIs, or developer platforms.
• Proven experience deploying and managing services in production, with strong judgment around reliability, observability, performance, and operational tradeoffs.
• Comfort working across application and infrastructure layers, including service development, cloud infrastructure, and infrastructure as code tools (e.g., Terraform).
• Strong systems instincts and curiosity to proactively identify and solve problems.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, especially in a remote environment.

Nice to Have

• Experience with package registries, artifact serving, or repository products (e.g., Docker registries, GitLab package services, Artifactory, Nexus).
• Familiarity with software supply chain security concepts (provenance, SBOMs, trusted artifact distribution).
• Open-source experience, particularly with developer tooling or infrastructure.
• Experience supporting or expanding multi-artifact repository platforms.
