Staff Software Engineer - Elation Health

Elation is a cloud-based clinical platform for independent primary care practices. We want doctors spending their time on patients, not paperwork.

We're hiring full-stack engineers for our billing team.

Billing is a challenging domain. We receive data from insurers and partners who each follow the standards a little differently, but we need to make billing simple for our customers regardless of their payer arrangements and chase down every dollar we can for them across denials. We're using LLMs to take over a lot of work people currently do by hand. You'll design, build, and run these systems yourself.

What the work looks like

• Building systems that balance financial transactions between insurance, patients, and the practice.
• Working with inconsistent data from outside partners and handling edge cases well.
• Shipping AI features that real users depend on, and figuring out how to tell when they're wrong.
• Improving a mature codebase while customers are using it every day.
• Owning your work in production and working with Support when something breaks.
• Collaborating with product and design to identify improvements and make them rapidly.

Your First 60 Days

• Ship something to production.
• Scope and build a new feature with Product and Design.
• Learn our stack and enough of the billing domain to be functional.
• Join code reviews and production support.
• Engage with customers and learn from their feedback.

6–12 Months In

• Own big features, collaborating with design and product stakeholders through deployment, monitoring, and adoption insights.
• Help set technical direction for your team on problems that you own.
• Resolve production issues quickly and speak to solutions natively.

Who We're Looking For

• Experience owning a problem from start to finish with a strong focus on failure modes and appropriate technical fixes.
• Willingness to learn healthcare billing and ask domain experts questions.
• Ability to explain technical trade-offs to non-engineers.
• Existing familiarity using AI tools in your workflow.

Requirements

Essential

• 8+ years of professional software development for Staff level, including technical leadership.
• Production experience building and running backend services and APIs.
• Comfortable working across the stack and in more than one language.
• Experience with alerting, observability, and instrumentation for real production solutions.
• Clear communicator with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Interest in building with LLMs.

Nice to Have

• Experience building production features with LLMs or machine learning.
• Data-driven mentality.
• Python, PHP, and MySQL experience.
• TypeScript and React experience.
• Payments, financial, or ledger systems experience.
• Event-driven or distributed systems on AWS.
• Observability and DevOps experience.
• US healthcare, medical billing, or claims experience.
