Overview of the Role
We're looking for a technical engineering manager to lead a team building and operating large-scale distributed systems. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise with strong operational instincts and a passion for building high-performing teams.
What You'll Do
- Enable Effective Execution: Partner with the team’s Product Manager to deliver with quality and speed.
- Ensure High Availability: Maintain 3+ 9s availability of Dedicated infrastructure, ensuring security and automating for maximum scalability and multi-tenancy.
- Lead and Automate: Provide clear direction, meaningful feedback, and foster an environment where meaningless toil is ruthlessly automated and DevOps ownership is enforced.
- Optimize Platforms: Continuously improve owned artifacts to optimize platforms for self-service production ownership by feature implementers.
- Team Development: Recruit, onboard, and develop excellent and productive team members.
- Be a Role Model: Provide Proof of Concepts, demonstrate an agentic mindset, simplify processes, and remove human toil ("Show and Tell, not only Tell").
- Incident Management: Role model best practices, lead fast resolutions/escalations, and train/codify best practices across GitLab.
- Data-Driven Prioritization: Use a data-driven approach to prioritize, quantify impact, and manage risk/technical debt. Leverage AI to demonstrate concepts and translate technical complexity for stakeholders.
What You'll Bring
- Technical Depth: Proven track record building and owning large-scale distributed services, with the ability to dive into architecture and guide technical strategy.
- Operational Excellence: Experience owning services running at four-nines (99.99%) SLOs and maintaining them.
- AI Tooling Experience: Experience leveraging AI tools to boost team productivity, with lessons learned from both successes and missteps.
- Team Leadership: History of building and managing high-performing, accountable team cultures (including performance management).
- Project Delivery: Comfort driving complex projects to completion without relying on a dedicated Technical Program Manager (TPM).
- Remote Leadership: Experience leading distributed and remote teams effectively.
About the Team
The Enterprise Platform team focuses on delivering the infrastructure and operational capabilities that let large, security-conscious customers run GitLab on their own terms. Within that group, the Dedicated team builds and operates GitLab Dedicated, our single-tenant SaaS offering that gives customers full data and source code isolation, private networking, and data residency in the AWS region of their choice — all deployed and maintained by GitLab with zero infrastructure overhead for the customer. We work asynchronously across regions and partner closely with Cell Infrastructure, Security, Compliance, and the Duo Agent Platform teams to extend agentic AI capabilities and multi-cloud support into single-tenant environments without compromising isolation guarantees.
