Professional Services - Technical Architect

About the Role

As a Professional Services Technical Architect at GitLab, you'll lead the technical direction of customer engagements from early scoping and discovery through delivery. You will design high-level architectures and implementation plans for GitLab infrastructure and functionality, ensuring deliverables align with customer requirements and the Statement of Work (SOW).

You'll coordinate implementation work across GitLab Professional Services and partner consultants, support customer deployments across cloud and on-premises environments using tools like Terraform, Ansible, and the GitLab Environment Toolkit, and lead enterprise migrations using Congregate. This role combines technical expertise with customer-facing leadership in GitLab's remote, asynchronous, and values-driven culture.

What You'll Do

  • Design and deliver GitLab reference architecture implementations for self-managed and cloud environments using Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
  • Lead source code management and CI/CD migrations to GitLab, including large-scale enterprise migrations using Congregate.
  • Build repeatable delivery kits, documentation, and enablement materials to support adoption and best practices.
  • Lead the full technical delivery lifecycle for Professional Services engagements from technical discovery through implementation and handoff.
  • Produce detailed technical designs, evaluating scalability, security, and compliance constraints in proposed architectures.
  • Deploy and configure GitLab in customer environments across on-premises and major cloud providers using Terraform, Ansible, and the GitLab Environment Toolkit (GET).
  • Provide DevOps and DevSecOps consulting and best-practice guidance, advising on frameworks like the Delivery Governance Framework (DGF) and GitLab Flow.
  • Coordinate implementation work across internal team members, partner consultants, and customer stakeholders using asynchronous communication.
  • Mentor consultants through training materials, delivery kits, and enablement sessions.
  • Maintain and enhance delivery automation assets with a focus on code cleanliness, maintainability, and testing.
  • Support SOW creation, review training materials, develop case studies, and maintain approximately 55% billable utilization.

What You'll Bring

  • Location & Travel: Based remotely in the United Kingdom, with availability for up to 50% travel at times.
  • Consulting Experience: Demonstrated experience delivering consulting services across two or more areas: SCM migration, cloud architecture, DevOps engineering, or CI/CD consulting.
  • Software & Systems Architecture: Enterprise software development background with the ability to design scalable, secure, and reliable systems with clear performance trade-offs.
  • Infrastructure & Automation: Hands-on experience deploying and managing infrastructure in cloud and on-premises environments using Terraform and Ansible, writing clean, tested automation code.
  • Migrations & Data Integrity: Experience executing migrations to GitLab using tools like Congregate, alongside working knowledge of data consistency and integrity concepts (e.g., ACID properties).
  • Communication & Async Collaboration: Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to articulate trade-offs, lead technical discussions, and operate effectively in an asynchronous, documented-first workflow.
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent practical experience.
