
About the Role
As a Backend Engineer on the Gitaly team, you will build and maintain GitLab’s Git data storage tier. You will work at the intersection of GitLab and Git, ensuring repository access is performant and reliable for GitLab.com, self-managed customers, and GitLab Dedicated. Your work will focus on distributed storage, high availability, performance, and the next generation of source code management.
What You’ll Do
- Own complex technical initiatives from problem definition through implementation and operational rollout.
- Lead technical design for distributed storage and scalability challenges using data-driven benchmarking.
- Partner with cross-functional teams including Infrastructure, SRE, and Dedicated to deliver outcomes.
- Improve engineering standards through mentoring, design reviews, and constructive code reviews.
- Take operational ownership, including incident response, capacity analysis, and on-call duties.
- Automate workflows and contribute to upstream projects to improve development and testing efficiency.
What You’ll Bring
- Significant professional experience building and optimizing distributed or highly available software in large-scale production environments.
- Strong systems design skills (performance, failure modes, concurrency, and observability).
- Professional experience with Go or another backend/systems language.
- Proven track record of owning projects end-to-end and influencing technical decisions.
- Experience with incident response and turning operational learnings into durable improvements.
- Strong communication skills; ability to explain complex technical trade-offs.
- Bonus: Experience with Ruby, Git internals, gRPC, or Git server infrastructure.
