About the Role
As a Senior Backend Engineer at GitLab, you will design, implement, and evolve product capabilities while solving high-scope backend problems. You will move beyond assigned tasks to actively improve the quality, reliability, and performance of our systems, working across product, frontend, infrastructure, and security boundaries.
Why You’ll Love This Role
- High Impact: Shape the architecture of a global platform used by millions.
- Technical Agency: Influence team objectives and long-range technical goals.
- Innovative Culture: Integrate agentic AI into production engineering workflows.
- Autonomy: Thrive in a remote-first, asynchronous environment.
- User-Centric Collaboration: Partner with PMs and designers to deliver genuine value.
What You’ll Do
- Drive Technical Direction: Design and ship complex backend features, making pragmatic choices between modular-monolith code, shared components, or independent services.
- Raise the Bar: Define backend standards for style, maintainability, testing, APIs, and operational readiness.
- Mentor & Lead: Support associate and intermediate engineers through code and design reviews.
- Operational Excellence: Diagnose and prevent performance issues at scale; participate in incident response.
