Staff Engineer, People Technology - GitLab

About the Role

As a Lead People Systems Engineer, you will drive GitLab's People systems evolution through an AI-first transformation mindset. You will own the code, pipelines, and integrations that keep GitLab's People automation ecosystem running reliably at scale across Workato, Google Cloud, Claude, and Workday.

What You’ll Do

• System Architecture: Design, develop, and maintain automations and integrations across Workato, GCP, Claude, and Workday.
• Engineering Excellence: Write, version, and maintain automation code in Ruby (or comparable languages) using GitLab for CI/CD and version control.
• Integration Management: Build and maintain integrations between Workday, Greenhouse, Slack, and internal tools using WWS and Slack APIs.
• AI Integration: Leverage LLMs and Model Context Protocol (MCP) frameworks to accelerate development and eliminate manual work.
• Technical Leadership: Serve as a subject matter expert on automation architecture, providing guidance to stakeholders and driving standardization.
• Reliability: Proactively diagnose root problems, improve system observability, and ensure high uptime for the automation stack.

What You’ll Bring

• Hands-on experience writing and maintaining production-grade code in Ruby, Python, or PHP.
• Deep expertise in enterprise automation platforms like Workato.
• Strong experience integrating with Workday using Workday Web Services (WWS).
• Proficiency with Git, GitLab CI/CD, and modern deployment practices.
• Experience building Slack apps and bots using APIs and SDKs.
• Familiarity with GCP or AWS; Docker/Kubernetes experience is a plus.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical architecture into clear stakeholder updates.
• An engineering mindset focused on reliability, observability, and maintainability.
