The Opportunity

We're looking for an Insurance Counsel - Forms to help us turn aggressive state and product expansion into policy language that holds up. Kin is entering new states and launching new products now, and that pace will continue through 2027 and beyond. Nothing sells in a new state until its full form set is drafted, and statutory research and original drafting are work that can't be handed off. This role is that work.

You'll join the Forms team within Legal & Compliance, reporting to our Senior Insurance Counsel. You'll anchor either personal auto or property, depending on your experience, and serve as backup for the other line. You'll be the drafting owner for your line of business. You'll also be a legal advisor to the business on what our forms say and mean, and you'll handle first-pass legal review so novel state law questions get the attention they need.

Your Responsibilities

  • Research state statutes and regulations directly and translate them into compliant, clear policy wording.
  • Draft responses to Department of Insurance objections on forms and advocate for Kin's position on form wording with regulators, including in forms-related audits and market conduct exams.
  • Provide legal advice on coverage interpretation and form wording to internal partners, including Claims, Product, and Customer Experience, and advise on form-related legal questions arising during DOI audits and market conduct exams.
  • Draft complete new state and product forms packages for your line of business, including base policies, endorsements, state amendatory endorsements, and required notices, ready for filing.
  • Perform first-pass legal review of forms drafted within the Forms team, and escalate novel state law questions to Senior Insurance Counsel.
  • Build and maintain the countrywide base forms and reusable state kit for your line. For personal auto, that includes UM and UIM, PIP, selection and rejection forms, and state notices. For property, it includes homeowners, manufactured home, condo, and flood, including surplus lines notices where applicable.
  • Establish drafting standards and reusable language that make each new state package faster to produce than the last.
  • Design and deliver internal training on Kin's policy forms, coverage interpretation, and state regulatory expectations.
  • Serve as the backup drafter for the other line of business, so no launch depends on a single person.
  • Identify legal risks in proposed product designs or coverage changes before they reach the form-drafting stage.
  • Review AI-assisted drafts and research for legal accuracy and regulatory compliance. Establish guardrails for where AI tools can be relied upon and where human legal judgment is required.
  • Maintain and update the forms packages in your assigned line of business, revising them in response to new statutes, regulations, and DOI bulletins, and to product enhancements and coverage changes.

Success in This Role

In your first 6–12 months at Kin, success is less about checking boxes and more about the impact you create. You'll use your skills and judgment to take ownership of meaningful work, improve how we operate, and help move Kin's mission forward. Along the way, you'll deliver outcomes that make a real difference for both Kinfolk and the homeowners we serve.

By the end of your first year, you should feel confident in your role, trusted as an owner, and proud of the progress you've helped make.

  • Multiple complete state and product forms packages for your line of business have been developed and delivered for filing.
  • You are the go-to subject matter expert on Kin's policy forms in your line of business.
  • Most forms now reach Senior Insurance Counsel only for final sign-off or novel state law questions.
  • A filing deadline can be met even when one drafter is out, because you can step into the other line of business.
  • Internal partners (Claims, Product, Underwriting, Sales & Customer Service) regularly come to you for coverage interpretation guidance, reducing escalations to Senior Insurance Counsel.

What You'll Bring

  • A Juris Doctor (JD) degree
  • 5+ years of policy form drafting experience, or a combination of policy form drafting and coverage interpretation, such as claims litigation or coverage counsel experience
  • Experience drafting personal lines policy forms for multiple states
  • Experience reading state insurance statutes and regulations directly and converting requirements into policy language
  • Experience drafting responses to regulator objections on form filings
  • Experience advising business stakeholders on coverage interpretation and policy wording
  • Track record of drafting complete forms packages independently, from initial research to filing-ready

Bonus if you have

  • Experience with Kin's lines of business: personal auto (UM and UIM, PIP, selection and rejection forms, state notices) or property (homeowners, condo, manufactured home, flood, or surplus lines notices)
  • Experience providing coverage opinions or interpreting and applying policy language to claims scenarios

How we work

We don’t just hire for skills. We hire for alignment. Kinfolk bring diverse perspectives, but we’re united by a shared set of values that shape how we work and how we show up for each other and our customers.

Run through walls, together - Every one of us is responsible for creating the culture we want to work in. High performance. Low drama. Always respectful. We assume the best in each other and challenge ideas, not intentions. We show up, work hard, and play to each other's strengths — because that’s how great teams win.

Raise the bar. Drop the ego - Attitudes are contagious. Every one of us is responsible for creating the culture we want to work in. High performance. Low drama. Always respectful. Like professional sports teams, we win by working in sync. We show up, work hard, and play to each other’s strengths.

Act like an owner - We are owners, fully accountable for achieving Kin’s mission. That requires positive, proactive, big-picture thinking well beyond our job descriptions. Ask questions, Take ownership. Do the right thing, even when it‘s hard. Because when Kin thrives, so do you. And so do our customers.

Operate lean. Deliver more - We build efficiency into everything we do. Each dollar we save gets reinvested to deliver more to our customers: better pricing, more products, and new innovations. We work smarter by relentlessly prioritizing and using technology, including AI, to multiply our impact. Lean is about focus, not deprivation. Lean isn't a limitation — it's our competitive advantage.

Keep asking ‘What if?’ - We value curiosity. To make insurance better for our customers, we experiment. We embrace insights. And we base decisions on data rather than assumptions. We see setbacks as opportunities for growth and are always learning and improving. Both individually and as a company.
