Mercury is looking for a Design Manager with a combination of creative leadership and personal craft to lead design for our Business Banking and Investments teams, spanning payments, accounts, and treasury. These teams help businesses move money, organize accounts, and put idle cash to work.

In this role, you’ll:

  • Raise the quality bar of the team's work: Own the visual and interaction quality of the experiences your team ships, from the structure of a complex workflow to typography, composition, spacing, and motion. Make the standard concrete through thoughtful critique, clear direction, and reviews of the implemented experience.
  • Challenge the status quo: Partner with Product and Engineering to shape an ambitious direction for payments, accounts, and treasury. Question inherited assumptions, distinguish genuine constraints from familiar habits, and turn strong ideas into simpler, more useful products.
  • Take ownership from problem to outcome: Identify opportunities proactively, bring clarity to ambiguous paths, align stakeholders, and navigate obstacles. Maintain accountability post-launch to evaluate customer and business impact.
  • Get hands-on where your craft makes a difference: Sketch directions, prototype interactions, or resolve complex flows alongside designers. Show what better looks like while developing the designer’s judgment and autonomy.
  • Turn ambition into excellent work that ships on time: Make deliberate decisions regarding scope, sequencing, and focus. Surface trade-offs early and identify which details are essential versus where simplicity enables speed.
  • Build a healthy team with high expectations: Develop designers' taste, confidence, and execution skills. Provide direct feedback, set clear performance expectations, and celebrate team contributions across Mercury Design.

You should:

  • Have strong visual and interaction design craft: A portfolio demonstrating thoughtful typography, composition, hierarchy, and interaction design across shipped products.
  • Know how to simplify complex product experiences: Proven ability to navigate complicated workflows, information architecture, and technical constraints to build intuitive experiences.
  • Have managed designers and raised the quality of their work: Demonstrated experience coaching designers, setting expectations, inspiring ambition, and holding teams accountable.
  • Have set a product vision and helped a team deliver it: Experience tying an ambitious product vision to practical execution, scope, and sequencing with measurable impact.
  • Stay close to the design work: Comfort sketching, prototyping, and solving detailed design problems collaboratively.
  • Build strong partnerships with Product and Engineering: Experience shaping priorities, resolving constraints, and building alignment through effective storytelling.
  • Think and work like an owner: Willingness to act on what's best for customers, make decisions under ambiguity, and adapt to shifting priorities.
  • Build conviction without relying on authority: Ability to articulate product direction clearly, listen to alternative viewpoints, and build alignment through curiosity and sound reasoning.
