Prefect Builds Automation for an Unpredictable World
Prefect builds and operates resilient, Pythonic orchestration and MCP platforms—including Prefect OSS, Prefect Cloud, FastMCP OSS, and Horizon—used for mission-critical workloads. In August 2026, Prefect and Dagster joined forces to build the next generation of automation infrastructure, combining data platforms, agent platforms, and the leading open-source developer framework for the MCP ecosystem.
Role Summary
We're hiring a Developer Relations Engineer reporting to our Chief Growth Officer. You own how developers learn to build with Prefect, Dagster, FastMCP, and Horizon. This includes writing reference implementations people copy into production, creating technical content and videos, identifying DX gaps by being your own first user, and maintaining a public presence on stage, on stream, and in issue threads.
This is a generalist engineering role by design. You'll write Python, appear on camera, review docs PRs, and file bugs you hit—often in the same day.
Time zones: Anywhere in the continental US. We're remote-first with occasional travel for events and recording sessions.
What You'll Do
- Ship reference implementations: Build working, maintained examples like MCP servers with production auth, gateway configurations, and agentic workflows.
- Teach agentic workflows: Make complex, evolving products understandable through demos, posts, talks, and videos that appeal to skeptical senior engineers.
- Own video content: Create technical, watchable long-form and short-form videos across YouTube, LinkedIn, X, and TikTok using our dedicated recording studio.
- Improve DX: Act as the first user, file issues, send documentation PRs, and fix examples.
- Represent us in public: Speak at conference talks, PyAI events, livestreams, podcasts, and participate in MCP and Python AI communities.
- Bring the field back in: Channel user confusion, breakage, and missing features directly into product feedback for our engineering team.
Your Qualifications
Must Have
- 6+ years writing software professionally, with strong Python skills preferred.
- A public body of technical work (repos, posts, docs, talks, or videos) that demonstrates your ability to build and communicate.
- Experience building with LLMs and agents (MCP servers, tool calling, agent frameworks, retrieval).
- Comfort being on camera and on stage.
- Ability to operate autonomously as a team of one, choosing what to build, shipping it, and measuring its impact.
Nice to Have
- Contribution to or maintenance of a popular open-source project.
- An existing developer audience (YouTube, X, Twitch, newsletter).
- Background in data engineering or orchestration (Prefect, Dagster, Airflow, dbt).
- Familiarity with enterprise governance, SSO, RBAC, audit logs, and PII.
