Staff Backend Engineer - Remofirst

About the Role

Remofirst is scaling rapidly and seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to help maintain our existing Python-based systems while leading the strategic transition of key components to Java. This is a hands-on, high-impact role requiring strong technical ownership and the ability to work within a fully remote, international environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Hands-on Leadership: Design, develop, and maintain backend services using our core stack (Java, Python, SpringBoot, FastAPI, Postgres, Kafka).
• Product Engineering: Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Product, Design, Operations, Sales) to build reliable, user-centric solutions for the global remote talent market.
• Architectural Strategy: Make pragmatic decisions regarding system architecture, domain boundaries, and the migration of legacy monolith functionalities to distributed systems.
• Engineering Excellence: Drive the adoption of modern practices including TDD, continuous delivery, SRE culture, and API-first design.
• Mentorship: Upskill the engineering team through code reviews, weekly learning sessions, and the promotion of best practices.

Requirements

• 8+ years of backend software development experience.
• Strong professional experience with Python (Django, FastAPI, Flask, or similar).
• Strong professional experience with Java, preferably using Spring Boot.
• Deep understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems.
• Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs.
• Proficiency with relational databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL); NoSQL experience is a plus.
• Familiarity with unit testing, integration testing, and TDD.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines and Git.
• Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS preferred).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
