Lead Product Manager, Security

The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking a Lead Product Manager to strengthen Wikipedia's security strategy in the AI era and foster a robust security culture.

Wikipedia, a trusted global knowledge source accessed by over a billion people monthly, is operated by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization. The Product Safety and Integrity team is dedicated to maintaining Wikipedia's stability and trustworthiness, protecting its contributors and readers from modern threats.

This senior role welcomes candidates with strong technical and security expertise, including familiarity with AI in a security context, who are interested in transitioning into a product and platform strategy role. Prior product management experience is not a prerequisite.

This is a unique opportunity to influence Wikipedia's trajectory during a pivotal time, as AI reshapes knowledge access and security landscapes. You will contribute to ambitious planning and decisive action, collaborating closely with the communities served by the project.

Responsibilities:

• Shape the Wikimedia Foundation's product security strategy and enhance team and organizational security culture.
• Define and drive priorities for a security and privacy-focused engineering team, leveraging cross-functional support from designers, data scientists, and community managers.
• Lead the design and development of technical features and interventions to improve user safety and deter malicious actors.
• Communicate openly and strategically with community members about security and privacy initiatives.
• Build strong relationships with volunteers, acting as a liaison between the Wikimedia community and the Foundation on security and privacy matters.
• Collaborate with other department leaders to bolster WMF's overall information security posture.
• Stay current with online security and privacy developments, including vulnerability research.

Skills and Experience:

• Minimum 7 years of professional experience in product development teams, with at least 2 years in a security-focused role.
• Proven track record of driving significant security initiatives to completion, either in a senior technical or product management capacity.
• Substantial professional experience utilizing AI-based tools for security analysis, code review, and software engineering tasks.
• Proficiency with command-line tools.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with all levels of management, staff, and communities.
• Ability to manage diverse responsibilities in a dynamic, results-oriented environment.

Desired Qualities:

• A strong belief in the value of Wikipedia and its community model.
• Decisiveness and efficiency in navigating complex stakeholder landscapes, including volunteer contributors.
• Experience working with online communities, particularly public ones.

The Wikimedia Foundation is a remote-first organization. Salaries are competitive, equitable, and aligned with our values. The anticipated annual pay range for this position within the United States is US$133,121 to US$207,388, with adjustments based on cost of living and other individualized factors. For applicants outside the US, the pay range will be adjusted to the country of hire. Salary history is not considered.
