About Ashby

At Ashby, we are building the highest standard of tooling for Talent Acquisition (TA) and HR teams. Our success and ambition mean we're doubling the Engineering team in the next year, and we need experienced leadership to help scale our unique culture thoughtfully. We have notable customers like Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake, tens of millions in ARR, and are growing >100% year over year.

Our Engineering Culture

We achieve incredible speed and quality by discarding industry norms and giving engineers the freedom and agency to be exceptional. At Ashby:

  • Minimal Process & Ownership: Every engineer runs their project. Engineers research problems, write product specs, build wireframes, and implement solutions end-to-end.
  • Natural Collaboration & Deliberate Communication: Focus time is held sacred, with engineers averaging under 2 hours of meetings per week.
  • High Leverage: We invest heavily in great developer tooling (CI/CD takes ~10m, deploying 15x+ a day), robust building blocks, and AI-powered tooling.
  • Diversity: 25% of engineers and 50% of our engineering leaders are from underrepresented groups.

The Role

As an Engineering Manager for Canada, you’ll work closely with co-founders and peers to build out the team and continue scaling our culture through grassroots leadership. You’ll initially manage 3 to 5 engineers and hire 3 to 5 more across Product Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering, and Design Engineering.

Your Day-to-Day

  • Provide feedback on product and technical specs to help engineers identify where to cut scope or improve quality.
  • Grow engineers to deliver large, loosely defined projects with minimal intervention.
  • Maintain hands-on technical skills by jumping into systems and code to debug customer issues, ship bug fixes, or improve developer experience.
  • Propose and lead department and company-wide initiatives (e.g., rethinking PR reviews, improving interviews, enhancing data generation for demo accounts).

What We're Looking For

  • Former great engineers who love coding and want to stay up-to-date on technology while building high-performing teams.
  • Leaders with the ambition, courage, and follow-through to drive change.
  • Individuals who thrive with ownership, autonomy, and a belief in a low-process, high-agency engineering environment.
