About the Role
Camunda is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our new Data Streaming team. You will help build a foundational new piece of architecture that changes how customers and internal products access process data. You'll be part of a greenfield team building a durable, continuously-written streaming layer that decouples data consumption entirely from the live engine.
You will play a key part in shaping the architecture, analytics products, and data consumers built on top of it. At Camunda, we approach engineering holistically, partnering closely with product management, data layer, distributed systems teams, QA, and support.
What Youβll Be Doing
- Design and build core streaming infrastructure that decouples process data access from the live execution engine, backed by durable, low-cost storage.
- Build customer-facing data streaming capabilities, including integrations with systems like Kafka for reliable process data ingestion.
- Rebuild how Camunda's analytics product consumes and serves process data at scale, moving it off the engine's critical path entirely.
- Make foundational architecture decisions as part of a small, high-ownership team, ensuring consistency and durability across a distributed streaming pipeline.
- Participate in L3 support and on-call rotations, partnering with Support and SRE to investigate data layer production issues.
What You Bring
- 7+ years of experience as a backend engineer in Java, with a strong focus on distributed or data-intensive systems.
- Hands-on experience with object storage systems (S3/GCS/Azure) and building reliable, idempotent upload/commit protocols against them.
- Experience with Kafka or a similar streaming/event-log system.
- Solid grounding in distributed systems fundamentals.
- Demonstrated track record of driving technical initiatives through genuine ambiguity in a greenfield system.
- Proven experience leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives (3+ months) end-to-end.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote-first environment.
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience with Apache Iceberg, Parquet, or lakehouse/data-lake architectures.
- Experience with embedded state stores (RocksDB) for projection/checkpointing workloads.
- Experience with stream processing frameworks (e.g., Apache Flink) and stateful processing.
- Familiarity with object-storage-native streaming architectures (e.g., WarpStream).
