C++/Rust Graphics and Windowing System Software Engineer - Mir

About the Role

Canonical is seeking a C++/Rust Graphics and Windowing System Software Engineer to join the team building Mir. You will help shape the technology stack for window managers and display subsystems, enabling graphics across everything from edge devices to full desktop environments.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement features across the Mir stack.
• Debug, track, and resolve technical issues.
• Participate in code and architectural reviews.
• Develop tests and performance benchmarks to ensure high-quality releases.
• Maintain documentation to improve the developer experience.
• Engage with the open-source community and commercial partners.
• Collaborate proactively within a distributed, global team.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
• 2+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Excellent proficiency in modern C++ and Rust.
• Familiarity with Linux as a development and deployment platform.
• Ability to work effectively in a distributed environment.
• Willingness to travel internationally twice a year for company events (up to two weeks per trip).

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Experience with the Wayland protocol ecosystem and compositors.
• Familiarity with OpenGL, Vulkan, Flutter, or other graphics/animation frameworks.
• Understanding of asynchronous programming and concurrency patterns.
• Proven track record of delivering robust code to production.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
