Community Engineer - Canonical

About the Role

Canonical is seeking Community Engineers across multiple seniority levels to help scale our community management efforts. You will act as a facilitator for the open source ecosystem, coordinating with internal teams to ensure community processes are efficient, sustainable, and impactful.

In this role, you will not be doing the community's work for them, but rather enabling energetic contributors to bring their vision of Ubuntu to life. You will bridge the gap between community interests and Canonical’s technical roadmap.

Key Responsibilities

• Program Management: Lead complex, multi-disciplinary initiatives from conception to launch.
• Technical Support: Engage with volunteer developers, address technical concerns, and help them build successful tools.
• Content Creation: Produce high-quality blog posts, social media updates, and technical documentation regarding community initiatives and events.
• Collaboration: Work closely with Developer Relations, product managers, marketing, and engineering teams.
• Advocacy: Represent the Ubuntu community and Canonical at conferences, expos, and through public speaking engagements.
• Community Engagement: Actively participate in Discourse, Matrix, and other community channels.

What We Are Looking For

• Technical Proficiency: Experience with Ubuntu Linux (kernel or userspace), DevOps, software development, testing/QA, package management, or container technology.
• Communication: Articulate, curious, and flexible with a strong public record of contributions (talks, blogs, GitHub, etc.).
• Soft Skills: Passionate, self-motivated, and capable of working autonomously.
• Experience: Proven background in technical program management and working with open source volunteer contributors.
• Mindset: You value soft skills and are comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
