Distributed Systems Engineer - Canonical

About the Role

Canonical is seeking a talented Distributed Systems Engineer to enhance our global SaaS services and support the next generation of IoT devices. You will work within a globally distributed team to build high-performance APIs, robust telemetry platforms, and scalable cloud-based SaaS solutions.

What You Will Do

• Architect & Build: Design high-performance APIs for streaming data services using Python and Go.
• Governance & Security: Develop auditing and management systems to ensure operational integrity, security, and compliance.
• Infrastructure: Partner with infrastructure teams to deliver scalable cloud-based SaaS and containerized on-prem deployments.
• Technical Leadership: Lead feature implementation from specification to production, provide code reviews, and set engineering best practices.
• Collaboration: Engage in high-level technical discussions with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
• Travel: Participate in team sprints in person 2–4 times per year in global locations.

What You Bring

• Technical Expertise: Proven experience architecting scalable backend services, messaging/data pipelines, and REST APIs using Go or Python.
• Security Focus: Deep understanding of cybersecurity, IAM models, encryption, and compliance frameworks (GDPR, HIPAA).
• Domain Knowledge: Experience with data streaming (MQTT, Kafka, RabbitMQ), observability (OpenTelemetry), and industrial protocols (OPC-UA, ModBus).
• Collaboration: Ability to mentor junior engineers and thrive in a cross-functional, distributed environment.
• Education: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
• Platform Familiarity: Experience with Ubuntu as a development and deployment platform.
