Engineering Director - Commercial Systems

About the Role

Canonical is seeking an experienced Engineering Director to lead our Commercial Systems unit. You will oversee three specialized engineering teams—Billing, Contracts, and Livepatch—responsible for the core software services that drive Canonical's business operations and security solutions.

Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor multiple engineering teams, ranging from graduates to seniors.
• Develop engineering managers to uphold Canonical’s culture and high standards.
• Define and implement performance management goals and objectives.
• Monitor and improve team health indicators.
• Maintain accountability for product development roadmaps.
• Collaborate with cross-functional leadership and stakeholders.
• Drive recruitment and talent acquisition for your teams.

What We Are Looking For

• Exceptional academic track record (undergraduate degree in a technical field or equivalent experience).
• Proven ability to lead large or multiple software engineering teams to deliver high-impact results.
• Proficiency in at least one of the following: Golang, Python, Java, or distributed integrations.
• Strong track record of exceeding expectations.
• Excellent written and spoken English with strong presentation skills.
• Result-oriented mindset with a drive to meet commitments.
• Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events (up to two weeks per trip).

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Performance engineering and DevOps/SRE experience.
• Background in accounting, sales operations, or business-critical systems.
