Engineering Manager - Web

About the Role

Canonical is looking for a Web Engineering Manager to lead, support, and grow a team of talented web engineers. You will work collaboratively across the organization to deliver reliable, scalable, and delightful user experiences for Canonical products, including Ubuntu-related initiatives.

As an Engineering Manager, your primary responsibility is to your people—ensuring they are growing professionally, doing valuable work, and thriving within the company. You will influence team culture, facilitate technical delivery, and drive strategy and execution.

Key Responsibilities

• People Leadership: Mentor and grow web engineers, ensuring they are challenged and supported.
• Technical Contribution: Demonstrate sound engineering principles by contributing to team goals, code reviews, and architectural decisions.
• Delivery: Estimate work, set goals, and ensure the team meets them consistently.
• Development: Design and implement well-tested, documented software using Web technologies or Flutter.
• Operations: Deploy and operate services, debug issues, and contribute to technical documentation.
• Collaboration: Work with product managers and other engineering teams to align on strategy and technical specifications.

What We Are Looking For

• Experience: Proven background in web development and technical leadership.
• Tech Stack: Passion for and experience with TypeScript, React, or Flutter.
• Education: Undergraduate degree in Computer Science/STEM or a compelling alternative path; exceptional academic track record.
• Soft Skills: Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills; self-motivated and result-oriented.
• Operational Excellence: Experience with Linux (Debian/Ubuntu preferred) and an eye for accessibility and performance.
• Logistics: Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each).

Nice-to-Have Skills

• Experience with container technologies (LXD, Docker, Kubernetes).
• Experience building and maintaining high-performing teams.
• Proficiency in REST API design, development, and governance.
• Background in performance engineering and security.
