Junior Linux Kernel Engineer - Ubuntu

About the Role

Canonical is seeking enthusiastic junior professionals to join our global Kernel Team. You will work on the Linux kernel for Ubuntu, contributing to the world's most widely used Linux platform across cloud, IoT, and enterprise environments. This is an ideal role for early-career engineers looking to master kernel-level development under the guidance of senior mentors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate proactively within a globally distributed team.
  • Learn from senior mentors to demystify Linux kernel internals and distribution.
  • Work with external silicon, cloud, and hardware partners on bleeding-edge platforms.
  • Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by customers and the community.
  • Take personal responsibility for the delivery of various Ubuntu Linux kernel flavors.
  • Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing.
  • Submit, review, and apply kernel patches in collaboration with upstream maintainers.

What We Are Looking For

  • Well-organized, motivated self-starter capable of thriving in a remote environment.
  • Professional communication skills in English (written and verbal).
  • Programming experience in C and/or Rust.
  • Familiarity with version control practices (ideally Git).
  • Solid understanding of operating system kernel fundamentals.
  • Ability to travel globally twice a year for company events (up to two weeks per trip).

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience or strong interest in Rust.
  • Proficiency in Python and Bash scripting.
  • Experience with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging.
  • Demonstrated experience with kernel patching and debugging.
  • Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and low-level system engineering.
