Junior Ubuntu Software Engineer - Canonical

About the Role

Canonical is hiring Junior Software Engineers to join our Ubuntu Engineering organization. You will work on the world's most deployed open-source operating system, contributing to projects that power public clouds, data science, AI, and IoT.

As a junior engineer, you will have the opportunity to work across four key teams:

  • Foundations: Maintaining core utilities, compilers, toolchains, and bootloaders.
  • Server: Leading the design and evolution of Ubuntu Server.
  • Desktop: Driving Ubuntu Desktop, including immutable desktop, WSL, and Flutter-based applications.
  • Debcrafters: Managing the health and maintenance of the Ubuntu archive.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and ship software using Rust, Go, Python, and C/C++.
  • Package, integrate, test, and upload open-source software to Ubuntu repositories.
  • Debug complex issues and deliver robust solutions.
  • Author and improve technical and community documentation.
  • Contribute to upstream and neighboring open-source projects.
  • Collaborate within a globally distributed team.

What We Are Looking For

  • Exceptional academic track record (High School and University).
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science/STEM, or a compelling narrative of an alternative path.
  • Passion for open-source software and a drive to go above and beyond.
  • Proficiency or experience with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C/C++.
  • Professional written and spoken English.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each).

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Familiarity with Linux distributions and system debugging tools.
  • Experience with automation tooling and CI/CD systems.
  • Prior contributions to open-source projects.
