About the Role

Canonical is seeking a senior software engineer to lead an initiative to modernize the configuration and build process of the Ubuntu Linux kernel. You will drive the implementation of advanced automation to simplify distribution and tailoring for client-specific needs.

What the role entails

  • Lead the design and implementation of an advanced automated Linux build control system.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure seamless deployment within the Canonical ecosystem.
  • Analyze and optimize kbuild, kconfig, and make processes to resolve complex build issues.
  • Propose innovative solutions to kernel build roadblocks and drive acceptance to upstream projects.

What we are looking for

  • Significant programming ability in Python; strong C skills are highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated experience in patching and configuring the Linux kernel.
  • Strong working knowledge of kconfig and git.
  • Solid background with open-source projects for custom Linux distributions (e.g., Yocto, buildroot).
  • Excellent communication skills in English (written and oral).

Nice-to-have skills

  • Proficiency in Javascript or Golang.
  • Experience writing CLI tools and interacting with REST APIs.
  • Solid background in CI/CD and process automation.
  • Experience with software packaging formats (Ubuntu/Debian/Snap).
