
About the Role
Canonical is expanding its in-house legal team and seeking an exceptional Legal Advisor or Legal Counsel. You will handle a variety of compliance and privacy matters within the technology and enterprise software sector, addressing cutting-edge questions of law, product development, and global regulation.
Key Responsibilities
- Policy & Compliance: Draft and review corporate policies, spearhead process changes, and deploy global regulatory controls.
- Privacy Programs: Develop, maintain, and scale global privacy programs, including conducting PIAs and ROPAs.
- Cross-functional Collaboration: Work with product teams to evaluate the impact of data protection laws and emerging AI regulations.
- Legal Support: Provide high-quality legal advice to internal stakeholders and coordinate with local counsel globally.
What We Are Looking For
- Exceptional academic track record from high school through university.
- Law degree (JD or equivalent) with an active license to practice or current progress toward one.
- Strong commercial judgment and a proactive, organized work ethic.
- Excellent written and spoken English with superior drafting skills.
- Ability to thrive in a multicultural, distributed environment.
- Willingness to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks long).
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience in compliance, data privacy, or product development.
- Understanding of the open-source software community and the technology industry (silicon, data centers, IoT).
- Previous experience in an in-house legal team or law firm.
