About the Role

Canonical's Device Delivery Team works with tier-1 OEM and ODM customers to pre-load Ubuntu Desktop and Ubuntu Core, bringing Ubuntu directly to millions of users. As a Software Engineering Manager, you will lead and manage the software engineering team to deliver OEM enablement projects in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Recruit, motivate, mentor, and enable your team to succeed in delivering quality products.
  • Project Management: Set goals, prioritize tasks, identify team health indicators, and monitor projects from kickoff to post-mortem.
  • Stakeholder Management: Coordinate with project managers, HWE, QA, and certification management; handle escalations.
  • Technical Collaboration: Communicate and resolve technical challenges with OEMs, ODMs, SiPs, and IHVs; collaborate with product engineering teams (Desktop, Foundations, Kernel, Security).
  • Strategy: Provide leadership for methodologies, standards, tools, and best practices.
  • Travel: Ability to travel to the EU, USA, China, and Taiwan is required.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in STEM (Computer Science or Software Engineering preferred).
  • Proven track record in technical roles with Linux (Ubuntu or Debian preferred).
  • Experience with management responsibilities.
  • Commitment to development/testing methodologies and maintainable code quality.
  • Ability to work productively in a globally distributed team.
  • Strong English and Chinese language communication skills (written and verbal).

Desirable Skills

  • Experience as a technical lead making architectural and design decisions.
  • Proficiency with: Ubuntu (kernel/userspace), deb/snap packaging, QEMU/KVM, LXC/LXD, Containers, Python, Go, C, bash, Postgresql, Mongo, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Ceph, or AI/ML.
  • Participation in open-source development projects.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines.
