Microservices Engineer - Canonical

About the Role

Canonical is seeking talented engineers to join our global microservices teams. This is a general selection track for engineers focused on back-end REST API microservices using Go and Python. We are looking for individuals with crisp, well-articulated views on API design, microservice architecture, and modern DevOps practices.

Our services scale to handle millions of Ubuntu clients and support critical global infrastructure. We are committed to leveling up our standards in scalability, performance, and resilience.

  • Database performance design and optimization
  • Multi-region service delivery for resilience
  • Fuzzing and proactive security analysis
  • Distributed systems tracing and profiling
  • Next-generation DevOps practices

Responsibilities

  • Write high-quality, robust software that operates at scale
  • Design APIs and software architecture for peer review
  • Build and maintain fault-tolerant applications
  • Collaborate proactively within a globally distributed team
  • Contribute to technical documentation and internal knowledge sharing
  • Debug complex issues and implement high-quality solutions
  • Participate in company events worldwide twice annually

Requirements

  • Exceptional academic track record (High School and University)
  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science/STEM, or a compelling alternative path
  • Proficiency in Python and/or Go
  • Experience with modern, maintainable software development
  • Familiarity with relational and non-relational databases
  • Experience with CI/CD and scalable web services
  • Strong Linux experience (Debian or Ubuntu preferred)
  • Professional written and spoken English
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each)

Additional Skills (Bonus)

  • Container technologies (LXD, Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Experience with build systems, toolchains, and cross-compilation
  • Knowledge of hyperscale public or private clouds
  • Performance engineering and security expertise
