About the Role

Canonical is hiring a Python Engineering Manager to lead teams within our Commercial Systems unit. You will be responsible for the development of internal products, maintaining high engineering standards, and fostering the growth of your direct reports. This role is pivotal in supporting Canonical's global growth through innovative open-source solutions.

The Commercial Systems Unit

This unit consists of six collaborative engineering teams. We are currently seeking managers for:

  • Data Governance Team: Focused on enabling secure, well-governed access to data via a data mesh, utilizing tools like Trino and Ranger.
  • Integrations Team: Responsible for automating SaaS user management, spend tracking, and integrating data sources into the data mesh using Python and open-source ETL solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Accountability for the design and development of internal products.
  • Leading and mentoring a team of software engineers working in Python.
  • Developing the skills and capabilities of direct reports.
  • Continuously improving processes, designs, and technical solutions.
  • Aligning engineering output with business needs to maximize impact.

Requirements

  • Exceptional academic track record (high school and university).
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical subject or a compelling alternative path.
  • Proven track record of exceeding expectations.
  • Experience with software development in a high-level language (Python, Golang, or Java).
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
  • Result-oriented mindset with a strong personal drive.
  • Ability to travel internationally twice a year for company events (up to two weeks long).

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Performance engineering and SRE experience.
  • Experience with data governance, data engineering, or data science.
