
About the Role
Canonical is hiring Rust Engineering Leads of all levels to drive the adoption of Rust across our full range of offerings, including Ubuntu, system firmware, bootloaders, the kernel, and desktop environments. We are looking for exceptional engineers to help rethink the foundations of future Linux systems.
This is a general application process for Rust engineers. After an initial interview, we will match you with the product team that best aligns with your interests and experience.
What You Will Do
- Design and implement well-tested, well-documented software in Rust.
- Advocate for Rust adoption within Canonical and upstream projects.
- Identify and prioritize codebases for Rust migration.
- Debug and resolve issues encountered by users.
- Participate in code and architectural reviews.
- Collaborate on technical specifications and engineering operations.
- Deploy and operate services developed by your team.
What We Are Looking For
- Exceptional academic track record (Computer Science or STEM degree preferred).
- Strong experience designing and writing high-quality Rust software on Linux.
- Deep passion for Linux at the system level.
- For senior roles: proven experience building, deploying, and operating distributed systems and APIs.
- Self-starting, organized, and result-oriented mindset.
- Professional written and spoken English.
- Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each).
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience developing for Ubuntu.
- Familiarity with LXD, MicroK8s, SnapD, IoT, Juju, Ubuntu Core, or Ubuntu Pro.
- Background in performance engineering and security.
