
About the Role
Canonical is looking for exceptional security-focused software engineers to integrate into our product teams. While you will contribute to product engineering, your primary focus is to champion security through threat modeling, architecture reviews, static analysis, and fuzzing.
What You'll Do
- Define, implement, and document new security features.
- Lead security-focused initiatives within product engineering teams.
- Analyze, fix, and test vulnerabilities in open source software.
- Contribute to Ubuntu and upstream open source projects.
- Audit source code for vulnerabilities and integrate security tools into pipelines.
- Extend Linux cryptographic components for FIPS and Common Criteria compliance.
- Develop hardening automation for Ubuntu and work on CIS benchmarks.
- Provide guidance and support to engineering teams on security best practices.
What We Are Looking For
- Exceptional academic track record (Computer Science or STEM degree preferred).
- Thorough understanding of common security vulnerabilities and remediation.
- Proficiency in one or more: C, C++, Python, Go, Rust, Java, Ruby, PHP, or JavaScript/TypeScript.
- Experience as a security champion or driving security within an SSDLC process.
- Strong Linux experience (Debian or Ubuntu preferred).
- Excellent communication skills and a passion for open source.
- Ability to work effectively in a globally distributed team.
Optional Skills
- Experience with Linux kernel development.
- Knowledge of cryptographic modules (OpenSSL, Libgcrypt) and low-level crypto APIs.
- Familiarity with security certifications (FIPS, Common Criteria) and OVAL.
- Performance engineering experience.
