
About the Role
Canonical is seeking an automation-first Site Reliability / Gitops Engineer to join our Information Systems (IS) team. You will play a critical role in maintaining services that support over 60 million Ubuntu users, driving operations automation across private and public clouds.
Key Responsibilities
- Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Develop and improve IaC practices to increase automation and consistency across distributed systems.
- Cloud Operations: Automate software operations for both private and public cloud environments.
- Resilience & Scalability: Develop new features and improve the performance of our cloud and container portfolio.
- Observability: Implement and maintain monitoring and alerting systems using tools like Prometheus, Grafana, and Elasticsearch.
- Collaboration: Work with development teams to design service architectures, documentation, and operational playbooks.
- Feedback Loop: Provide critical feedback to developers by submitting bugs and pull requests to improve open-source technologies at scale.
- Operational Excellence: Maintain core services, networks, and infrastructure while participating in on-call rotations for time-critical escalations.
What We Are Looking For
- Engineering Background: Strong experience with version control, peer review, CI/CD, and Agile methodologies.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Python software development.
- Deep knowledge of Linux networking, routing, firewalls, and storage (Ceph, Databases).
- Hands-on experience administering enterprise Linux servers.
- Extensive knowledge of cloud computing concepts.
- Communication: Ability to communicate effectively in English across global, distributed teams.
- Mindset: A passion for open-source (Ubuntu/Debian), a willingness to learn new technologies quickly, and the ability to troubleshoot from kernel to web.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science or a related engineering field.
