Software Engineer - Python - Container Images

About the Role

Canonical is building a new generation of Ubuntu-based container images to simplify open-source application deployment globally. We are looking for an experienced Software Engineer to build and maintain our portfolio of container images while ensuring a seamless Ubuntu user experience.

In this role, you will work with internal and external teams to drive quality, implement CI/CD automation, and contribute to fast-moving products like Rocks (OCI images). You will have the opportunity to steer the team, mentor junior engineers, and engage with the open-source community as a subject-matter expert.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build robust, scalable, and high-quality container images.
  • Develop and maintain automated CI/CD processes for building, testing, and publishing images.
  • Write tools and tests for security compliance and cloud-native compatibility.
  • Participate in code and architectural reviews.
  • Contribute to Python- and Go-based container-building tools.
  • Engage with the open-source community and contribute to documentation.
  • Mentor team members and assist in the hiring process.
  • Collaborate in an agile, globally distributed environment with up to 15% travel for team sprints.

What We Are Looking For

  • Strong software development background with experience in Python.
  • Experience building container images and mastery of orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Proficiency with CI/CD systems (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Concourse CI).
  • Familiarity with GitOps principles and workflows.
  • Experience with Linux systems administration and package management.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, STEM, or equivalent.
  • Ability to lead and mentor junior team members.
