
About the Role
Canonical is seeking a Software Maintenance Engineer to join our global, distributed team. You will work across the full Linux-based infrastructure stack—including bare metal, virtualization (KVM), containerization (Docker/LXC/LXD), storage (Ceph), networking (OVS/OVN), OpenStack, and Kubernetes.
This role focuses on resolving critical issues for enterprise customers, requiring deep-dive troubleshooting, upstream bug fixes, and collaboration with global engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Resolve complex customer issues related to Ubuntu, Kernel, Ceph, OpenStack, or Kubernetes.
- Develop and backport bug fixes, ensuring inclusion in upstream projects and Ubuntu.
- Maintain close collaboration with Field, Support, and Product Engineering teams.
- Participate in upstream open source communities.
- Review code and provide technical guidance to peers.
- Manage time effectively to prioritize critical technical tasks.
- Travel internationally up to 10% of the time (approx. 4 times a year) for team sprints and events.
Requirements
- Exceptional academic track record in Computer Science, STEM, or a related field.
- Proven experience with Linux and open source software.
- Proficiency in at least one of: Python, Go, C, or C++.
- Strong drive to learn unfamiliar technologies and troubleshoot complex, deep-level issues.
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Familiarity with Ubuntu (kernel or userspace), Postgresql, Mongo, or Debian packaging.
- Experience with distributed systems.
- A passion for open source and working in a global, distributed environment.
