Staff Security Operations Engineer - Canonical

About the Role

Canonical is building a new Security Operations (SecOps) team reporting directly to the CISO. We are seeking individuals ranging from experienced professionals capable of defending against state-level actors to exceptional early-career talent with a proven passion for cyber defense. Your mission is to secure Canonical’s internal infrastructure and contribute to the robustness of the global Ubuntu ecosystem.

What You Will Do

  • Strategy & Operations: Implement and evolve SecOps standards, playbooks, and security architecture.
  • Threat Management: Identify, contain, and guide the remediation of security threats and cyber attacks.
  • Tooling: Evaluate, select, and implement market-leading security tools and practices.
  • Leadership: Drive threat modelling and table-top exercises across Engineering and IS departments.
  • Advocacy: Grow Canonical’s SecOps thought leadership through blog posts, whitepapers, and conference presentations.
  • Collaboration: Contribute to open-source threat intelligence initiatives and work with leadership to influence security policy.
  • Agile Delivery: Plan and deliver work within Canonical’s agile engineering framework.

What We Are Looking For

  • Exceptional academic track record (Computer Science or STEM degree, or a compelling alternative path).
  • Proven drive and a history of exceeding expectations.
  • Deep personal motivation to stay at the forefront of technology security.
  • Expertise in threat modelling, risk management frameworks (NIST CSF), and security standards (ISO 27001).
  • Experience contributing to and consuming threat intelligence feeds.

Optional Skills

  • Experience in a Security Operations Centre (SOC).
  • Hands-on experience in offensive or defensive security teams.
  • Familiarity with state-actor and advanced persistent threats (APT).
