
About the Role
Canonical is hiring Engineering Managers and Senior Managers to lead teams across the Ubuntu Engineering organization. We are looking for leaders who are passionate about software quality, performance, and resilience, and who have a proven track record of building and nurturing high-performing teams. At Canonical, managers are expected to remain technical and stay close to the code, processes, and people.
Key Ubuntu Engineering Teams
- Foundations: Maintaining core utilities, compilers, toolchains, bootloaders, and filesystems.
- Server: Leading the design and evolution of the Ubuntu Server distribution.
- Desktop: Driving Ubuntu Desktop, including Ubuntu Core Desktop, WSL, gaming tech, and Flutter-based applications.
- Debcrafters: Responsible for the maintenance and health of the Ubuntu archive.
Responsibilities
- Lead, challenge, and develop strong engineers while influencing team culture.
- Facilitate technical delivery and define strategy and execution roadmaps.
- Design, build, and ship high-quality software in Rust, Go, and Python.
- Engage with the broader open source community and contribute to upstream projects.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and hands-on career development.
- Collaborate with product management to define the vision for Ubuntu.
- Author and improve technical and community documentation.
Requirements
- Exceptional academic track record (High School and University).
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science/STEM or a compelling alternative path.
- Significant experience with Rust, Go, Python, Flutter, or C/C++.
- Demonstrated passion for open source software.
- Excellent communication skills in professional English.
- Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each).
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience managing technical teams.
- Background in Linux distribution engineering or software packaging.
- Performance or Security Engineering experience.
