Ubuntu Linux Kernel Engineer - Silicon Enablement

About the Role

Canonical is seeking a Linux Kernel Engineer to join our Silicon Enablement team. You will play a critical role in expanding Ubuntu's support for System On Chip (SoC) platforms, working directly with industry leaders like NVIDIA, Xilinx, MediaTek, and Qualcomm to ensure optimal performance for our users.

We are looking for candidates ranging from early-career professionals to industry veterans. While direct Linux kernel experience is a major advantage, we welcome applicants with strong backgrounds in RTOS or bare-metal environments who can demonstrate deep hardware-level engineering expertise.

What You Will Do

• Collaborate with a globally distributed team to integrate platform support into the Ubuntu Linux kernel.
• Diagnose and resolve kernel issues reported by partners, customers, and the open-source community.
• Take ownership of delivering silicon-optimized Ubuntu kernel variants.
• Improve tooling and automation for kernel delivery and testing.
• Submit, review, and apply kernel patches while engaging with upstream maintainers.
• Identify and implement new methods to maximize performance on partner silicon.

What We Are Looking For

• Significant programming ability in C.
• Strong grasp of device drivers, BSPs, and hardware-level system engineering.
• Solid background with git and operating system kernel fundamentals.
• Well-organized, self-motivated, and capable of thriving in a remote environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks per trip).

Preferred Skills

• Python and Bash scripting.
• Experience with major SoC families.
• Familiarity with Ubuntu/Debian/Snap packaging.
• Demonstrated experience with Linux kernel patching and debugging.
• Solid understanding of performance optimization for silicon platforms.
