Senior Distributed Systems Engineer - Cloudflare

About the Role

We are looking for a talented Distributed Systems Engineer to join the Data Localization team. You will build the infrastructure that enforces where customer data is stored, processed, and decrypted across one of the world's largest globally distributed edge networks. This role requires building resilient systems with provable geographic boundaries that hold under failure at scale.

What You Will Do

• Design, build, and operate backend services that enforce regional data residency boundaries.
• Contribute to end-to-end feature delivery: write technical designs, implement services, add observability, and own systems in production.
• Partner with cryptography, networking, and product teams to integrate residency guarantees without regressing performance.
• Reason about failure modes, consistency, and blast radius; design systems that fail closed for compliance.
• Participate in on-call rotations, lead incident response, and drive capacity planning.
• Raise the engineering bar through code review, mentorship, and clear technical communication.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience designing and operating production distributed systems at scale.
• Strong proficiency in Go, Rust, or C/C++.
• Solid grasp of distributed systems fundamentals: consistency models (Paxos/Raft), replication/sharding strategies, and handling failure modes (network partitions, clock skew).
• Experience with API design (REST/gRPC), relational databases, and event streaming systems.
• Comfortable with AI-assisted development tools while maintaining accountability for code quality and security.
• Track record of production ownership, including incident response and post-mortems.

Nice-to-Have

• Experience with compliance-driven, security-sensitive, or multi-region systems.
• Familiarity with cryptography (envelope encryption, HSMs, PKI).
• Exposure to edge, CDN, or L4/L7 proxy platforms.
