Senior Software Engineer, R2 Gateway - Cloudflare

About the Role

R2 is Cloudflare's object storage platform, providing durable, reliable storage with zero egress fees. The R2 Gateway team owns the request-facing layer—the S3-compatible API gateway that handles every object put, get, list, and delete operation. As the team scales, you will help evolve the gateway to maintain strict S3 compatibility while delivering low-latency, high-availability access at a global scale.

Responsibilities

• System Design: Design, implement, and operate the S3-compatible API gateway, ensuring correctness and low latency.
• Infrastructure: Build and operate production services on Cloudflare Workers and Kubernetes.
• End-to-End Ownership: Manage the request path, including authentication, authorization, routing, rate limiting, and error handling.
• Project Lifecycle: Own projects from design docs through implementation, testing, deployment, and monitoring.
• Reliability: Improve observability, drive incident resolution, and participate in on-call rotations.
• AI Integration: Leverage AI tools extensively to accelerate development, debugging, and operational workflows.
• Collaboration: Coordinate with storage, metadata, and networking teams on API contracts and capacity planning.

Desirable Skills & Experience

• Programming: Strong proficiency in Rust, TypeScript, Go, or similar languages.
• Distributed Systems: 5+ years of experience building/operating large-scale distributed systems with strict latency and reliability requirements.
• API Expertise: Experience designing high-throughput APIs, including authentication, routing, and backward-compatible evolution.
• Infrastructure Knowledge: Familiarity with object storage, HTTP/API gateways, edge computing, or service-oriented architectures.
• Reliability: Strong understanding of monitoring, alerting, performance tuning, and incident response.
• Communication: Excellent written and verbal skills for cross-team coordination.
• AI Workflow: Comfortable using AI coding tools as part of a daily development process.
• Bonus: Experience with the S3 API surface, Cloudflare Workers, or Durable Objects.
